Becoming a blood donor out of a desire to help children with leukemia
Serghei and Mariana became a family in 2011. Shortly after, from their great love, Xenia was born, a little girl with blue eyes, who brought even more light into their home. The little one was growing up before their eyes, the parents were happy, and their family seemed fulfilled and happy, as all families are where the children are healthy and strong.
Xenia started attending kindergarten, meeting and learning new things, making friends and discovering the world. Until one fine September day in 2017 when, out of the blue, the little girl felt unwell.
THE DISEASE APPEARED SPONTANEOUSLY, LIKE A TORNADO ON A CLEAR DAY
"She had a very high fever, 39.5. No medicine helped her and we had to go to the hospital with her. There, she underwent investigations and tests, and the results were not encouraging at all — her hemoglobin was 61. They urgently transferred her to intensive care and gave her a blood transfusion. She spent 5 days in the hospital, without her parents, without a diagnosis. Only later did they tell us to take blood tests at the Oncology Hospital, and the results showed nothing worrisome. Only when she had a sternal puncture were 59% blast cells detected, which confirmed that Xenia had leukemia," says Mariana, the girl's mother.
At 5 years and 8 months old, Xenia, the little girl with hair like an ear of wheat, learned to endure the disease, to be on infusions 24/7, to accept blood, plasma, platelet transfusions, and to make the Oncology Hospital her second home.
After 9 months of steadfast resistance, she received the good news — THE TREATMENT WAS SUCCESSFUL, even though it was supposed to be administered in 2019.

Since the year his little girl got sick, Sergei has become a blood donor. He responds to any call from the National Transfusion Center, donating whenever needed.
"I know that my blood saves lives, just as someone saved my little girl's life. Blood is not bought, it is not sold, it is donated from the heart, and since 2018 I have been doing this," confesses Sergei.
